Cheers and Jeers

by Lara on March 6, 2012

I used to be on the editorial staff for my high school newspaper.  Imagine a teenage Lois Lane-wannabe, scurrying around demanding copy and negotiating deadlines, and you’ll have an idea about why I wasn’t in line for Homecoming Queen.

My favorite part about producing the newspaper (The Messenger was what it was called.  As in, don’t shoot me…) was a Features section called “Cheers and Jeers.”  This was where we basically made a list of all the cool things happening and all the things we wished weren’t happening.

Maybe it’s because Spring Break is in the air, but I’m feeling a bit nostalgic over those times and thought I’d recreate it.

Cheers:

I’m finally eating vegetables and other “good for baby” foods again.

Jeers:

I still can’t shake my macaroni and cheese habit.

Cheers:

It’s been at least six months since I drank my last diet soda.

Jeers:

I can’t stop hoarding sparkling water.

When the nurse practitioner informed me that seltzer water contains “a lot of sodium,” and that I should reconsider my intake, I threw a fit.  I’ve already given up alcohol, caffeine (*cough* mostly), pedicures, and steaming hot baths.  Sparkling water is my only remaining vice.  Unless you’re telling me it will cause my baby to grow a tail, I refuse.

Cheers:

We’re going on a very brief “babymoon” trip to Palm Springs this week.

Jeers:

I have to figure out how I’m going to lounge poolside in a bathing suit without offending the senses of everyone around me.

Cheers:

I’m fortunate to have a supportive, gainfully employed husband with a job that will allow me to spend most of my time with our baby.

Jeers:

Said husband gets zero paid paternity leave.

Cheers:

At nearly 18 weeks pregnant, I’m finally starting to feel more like my old self.

Jeers:

22 weeks to go feels like a long time from now.  I am still not one of those women who “loves being pregnant,” and can really only focus on the day we get to meet our baby.

Anyone else want to share their Cheers and Jeers for the week?

I recommend a soda stream to help with your sparkling water habit

Glad you’re feeling better!

Cheers: It’s a super warm day outside, perfect walking weather.
Jeers: My baby is teething so we’re both so sleep-deprived that I don’t know how I’m going to find the energy for a walk.

Abby March 6, 2012 at 1:28 pm

I would think the Mac n Cheese thing would be a “Cheers!” 😉
Glad you’re feeling a bit better and just remember that this whole feeling crappy thing is temporary (or so I’m told.) Pretty soon you get to have a shower and let people buy you a bunch of things and make you great food. Then, you know, a baby!
Cheers to that!

Indeed, cheers to that!

No pedicures? WOT

Lara March 6, 2012 at 4:13 pm

I KNOW! I haven’t been able to find a place that’s well ventilated, and the polish and polish remover and all that stuff freaks me out a little. I’m working on a good alternative 😉

So funny as mac and cheese had made an appearance twice in the last few weeks for me! Although I was under the impression since my Perrier said it was sodium free that it really was….I don’t know if I can make that sacrifice, but maybe I can cut back to 3 a week.

Reply

Lara March 6, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Stacy: Perrier may very well be sodium free. If it says it on the label, then it is. I tend to drink the flavored types, which is probably different nutritionally.

Stacy K March 6, 2012 at 4:22 pm

It says it’s sodium free, but after reading your post I did some searches online and it looks like it has some sodium in it, but less than the required amounts and that’s how they can get away with claiming they are sodium free. Sneaky people

Lara March 6, 2012 at 4:23 pm

Sneaky indeed! Still, I don’t see how the nurse can say it has “a lot” of sodium…seems silly to me!

Jeers for no paid paternity, for sure. However I am campaigning to have that changed!

Lara, so glad you’re starting to feel like your old self again, and baby will be here before you know it. Enjoy all the little kicks and hiccups – it’s such an amazing feeling.

I’ve read that salt is actually good for mamas-to-be, and so I say drink the seltzer water. Our bodies need some sodium…mac & cheese is always a good option as well. 🙂

P.S. Oh how I miss spring break!

Fun post Lara!!!
If your baby comes out with a tail because of fizzy water, I’m thinkin’ you’ll make a zillion bucks with the lawsuits and media appearances. That could solve the little issue of the no paid paternity leave for your husband. Hmmm….
Kidding of course!!!!! Glad you are starting to feel more yourself. Enjoy the weekend away!!

Reply

Lara March 10, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Hmmm…good point, Andrea… 😉

Hahaha. Amendment: my GYN says its ok. I was just curious… I mean, weaning off caffeine takes years for my level of addiction…

Reply

Lara March 10, 2012 at 7:11 pm

Thanks Elise! Yeah, I’m doing the occasional cup of half-caf, but nothing compared to what I was used to!

Ah, such a cute post :).

Cheers: I’m getting my hair cut tomorrow!
Jeers: I hardly ever like my haircut after I wash it for the first time.

Happy International Women’s Day, lady. xo

Cheers: Only one week until you find out if your baby has an innie or an outie 🙂
Jeers: That mac & cheese habit is here to stay girlfriend – only now you can add broccoli to it. And now I must have a box of Annie’s for dinner. Damn you, Lara!

Andrea: Jeers–its been postponed another week until 20 weeks 🙁

I did tell you that the cloud would lift eventually. You don’t have to be a woman who loves pregnancy.. not everyone does! Enjoy your time away with your hubs.

HOW FUN! yay for a mini-getaway!

why not hot steam baths?! that’s bad for the baby in some way?! huh, i dont get it.

P.S. I have been loving on tuna fish recently…which then makes me think of mercury and preggo women that can’t have it……which then makes me think of you. SO basically this means I have been thinking of you when I eat seafood. Don’t you feel LOVED?! you should. I love you. 🙂

Reply

Lara March 19, 2012 at 5:22 pm

Haha–I DO feel loved! I think pregnant women can have tuna once a week or so (but never raw or undercooked!). So I’ve had the occasional tuna sammie but that’s about it :/
