Have you ever been part of a conversation where other people are completely ripping on something or someone that you actually kind of like? You either sheepishly hang your head and pretend like you didn’t hear, or try to defend your allegiance with as much dignity as you can muster. That is how I feel about the following.
1. SPAM. Not the kind in your inbox. The kind that comes in a can. I know, I know, it’s totally gross and terrible. But I grew up eating it, cut up in small pieces, in things like fried rice and egg foo yong. I love the salty deliciousness.
2. Facebook Timeline. I don’t really know why. It seems to make everything more accessible, and the newspaper/magazine look really appeals to me.
3. Angelina Jolie. Okay, judging by her insurmountable celebrity I suppose other people do like her, but I have a hard time finding them. Yeah, she went through that weird phase with wearing vials of blood (and something about a velcro wall in her house?), but I have a huge girl crush on the globe-trotting, world-saving, impossibly gorgeous chick she has become.
4. Writing things by hand. I am one of the only people I know that still keeps a giant desk calendar, an actual address book, and handwritten to-do lists and reminders. Addressing envelopes for holiday cards and writing thank you notes are fun tasks to me. I just enjoy the actual act of writing.
5. Big hair. I know straight hair has been more “in”‘ in recent years, but I will never stop loving the big, curly Barbie hair look. I don’t care how outdated it may become.
Is there anything you like that you feel no one else appreciates?

I am with you on making lists and enjoying the art of writing. I still journal in a notebook even though most of my thoughts are shared via my blog.
And I wish big hair was in … I’d be all set! Instead, I spend countless hours a week straightening my big, fluffy curls!
Stop making me jealous! 😉
I love big hair too – but then again, I DO live in the South where big hair is always in.
I like “imitation” crab meat, or surimi, but everyone always cringes when I say I like it. It’s not as “cultured” as real crab meat. But I’m ghetto so I eat it!
Love it. In the South, don’t they have the phrase, “The bigger the hair, the closer to God?” 😉
I like imitation crab meat too. I mean I like real crab meat better of course, but I am totally not above the fake stuff!
I’m Team Aniston, have never tried spam, but am completely with you on big hair (like Carrie Bradshaw!) and writing things by hand.
I don’t think you would like Spam. You’re too classy for it 🙂
i also love angelina jolie… though i do wish she’d put some meat on her bones. she’s so skinny lately.
I agree she seems very thin lately, but I try not to let weight influence my opinion of people.
(I know you don’t either–but I think a lot of other people judge her for it, which really isn’t fair!)
I do believe there are other people in the world that appreciate some of the same things I do, but maybe in my environment/age cohort it seems a little less. Sometimes it seems like I’m the only one who likes reading and those variety puzzle books (I used to do them with my grandpa and sometimes I pick up one for kicks!).
A great companion post to this would be “stuff I hate that everyone else loves”.
Haha! Susan, that was my plan exactly for a “sequel” post 😉 Oh, and I like reading too! Just not as much as writing 😉
I love writing things out as well, and I think I will always have a planner/calendar and a pen or pencil on hand. Just can’t get into Google calendar or scheduling things on my phone. Plus, I really like my handwriting and am happy spending all day hand addressing letters/invitations- I had a temp job where that’s all I did, and I kind of loved it.
I also like Spam and Vienna sausages. No shame.
I like my handwriting (most of the time!) too 🙂 What a fun temp job!
Facebook timeline, big/curly hair and writing things in notebooks…all things I really love!!!
I write a lot of things by hand. There used to be a time when I couldn’t start a writing project without first writing down some notes by hand. That has changed though. But I think I’ll always have a “real” calendar… 🙂
I think I can agree with you on all points! EXCEPT the spam, no to spam. Much prefer parma ham.. and Angelina – OK we ALL have a crush on her admittedly but I am Team Aniston. 😉
Good read as usual, thanks Lara. x
Parma ham…yum! Much more gourmet 😉
Honey big hair is the only hair.
I love high-waisted jeans…and HATE Tom’s shoes. I think they are so ugly! Like why not just wear some socks?
I haven’t actually seen a pair of Tom’s in real life, but I think I feel the same. Kind of like Crocs. Don’t get me started on Crocs.
OMG I HATE CROCS (AND UGGS) SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TOMs are also one of things I dislike, but everyone else loves? :-\
Haha. Croc haters unite 😉 I should tell you though that I don’t own a pair of Uggs but I would like to at some point…they just seem warm and comfortable!
Lara – don’t give in to the UGGs!! There are many days in gloomy England weather I glance over at a fur-lined-ugg…wondering… ‘what if?’… but I hasten to add: I will not go there. Perhaps, I will FINALLY give in if I moved to the Alps……………. my final query, how were these founded in Aus when they are for cold weather? Puzzled.
haha I love Tom’s….
and spam musubi! bomb!
i like big hair too…partly because mine is so FINE and I can never recreate big hair! My hair doesnt stay when I blow dry it, and barely when I curl it…so I am ALWAYS wishing I had a little more volume!
and i am all about calendars and writing things by hand.
I also love snail mail……..which many people dont participate in anymore. LAME
I love your snail mail! What is spam musubi?!
Hi Lara, spam musubi is like a Hawaiian sandwich of sorts: a pan-fried slice of Spam between two layers of rice, all wrapped up on nori. Many people call it Spam sushi. When you’re done having your baby, you’re invited to our Momo Spam-O-Rama, to be held on August 11. Anyone can enter, just make your favorite Spam recipe and head to 600 South Jackson in Seattle by 4:00. Call me for details! 206.329.4736. Good luck with baby. Oh, and I like that you like Spam.
I’ve never had spam. I bought some spam lite when we evacuated on oahu a couple of yrs ago when I thought I might die, so I might as well die having tried spam once. I didn’t die and I couldn’t bring myself to eat the spam- silly me!
One thing I like doing that most people don’t is (you know…) …giving blood! I’m amazed that I’ve gotten into the non-written thing so much (calendars, notes, etc). I even tried to keep my training journal in an app (or 3 to test them all out) but I coudln’t hang with them- too complicated. So now I just go old school with paper and pen (granted it’s printed from my laptop :-))
(*evacuated for a tsunami warning)
I also like big hair & writing. I used to love taking notes in college just so I could fill up a notebook. 🙂
On that note, I have a strange affection for office supply stores. I could spend hours in an Office Max just sorting through fancy crisp notebooks and fresh pens. I also really like going to the dentist. I pretty much always end up having a cavity (I have soft teeth) but I like getting my teeth cleaned and even getting a filling isn’t all THAT bad! Needles are another thing I don’t really mind all that much…
haha you are right, i don’t like most of those things. except writing by hand. things i love that some people think i am weird for: grocery shopping for hours, sneezing, and math.
I lovvve writing things out as well! There is something so therapeutic about it.
And I love folding laundry. Something about the warmth and clean smell…ahhh…
haha!
I long, flat straight hair and whenever I want to make my hair look special, I spend a lot of time making it look big with tons of volume. I envy girls who have waves and curls.
I like doing dishes even though I know a ton of people who hate dishes.
