Five Things I Think Unfairly Get a Bad Rap

by Lara on November 4, 2011

Is it bad “rap” or bed “rep”?  Does anyone actually know?

Moving on.

I am certainly not above calling things out when I just don’t understand them.  However, I also think that certain things get unfairly judged as stupid, difficult, or confusing, when they just aren’t.

1.  Tofu.  If you really don’t like the taste of tofu, that is your prerogative, but refusing to eat it based on texture or content is ridiculous.  The texture, certainly, is no more offensive than Jello or those plastic-like American cheese slices; foods which people who eschew tofu seem to happily consume.

2.  Changes to Facebook.  Why does the entire universe seem to momentarily collapse when the Facebook interface changes?  Trust me, you will adapt to it in two days, tops.  Change is part of life, people.  Deal.

3.  Bacon.  The average slice of bacon has less than 50 calories, yet imparts so much flavor to any meal or dish.  Somehow bacon has gained a reputation for almost single-handedly causing America’s obesity problem.  I object.

4.  Country music.  I get it: the simplicity of country music and its often conservative fanbase easily lends itself to being criticized.  But to generalize all country singers (and their fans, for that matter) as backwoods alcoholics who sing about nothing but broken hearts and  the American flag is outright ignorant.   Country has a deep-rooted legacy in our country’s musical history and now includes many styles and subgenres.  So give it a break.

5.  Generation Y.  Agree: we are a bunch of spoiled, entitled brats.  Disagree: we are lazy and have nothing to contribute.  Just because we read books on a Kindle and communicate with those scary mysterious smart phones just makes us a little more efficient than the generations before us.  And, dare I say it, but let’s not forget that those would also be the generations that raised us.

Very interesting post! I LOVE country music and can’t stand when people say they listen to “anything but country”. Seriously, get over it! I also hate how society has given bacon such a bad name. That rep has totally invaded my psyche and I rarely eat bacon now. Ugh!
I have to say I don’t eat tofu because of the texture. In my defense, I also dislike the texture of Jello and lame rubbery American cheese slices, and avoid those too haha

Fair enough about the tofu 😉

I hear ya on points 1-4. But point #5, I don’t know… 🙂 Now, Gen X – they’re really scary! 🙂

A big giant YES to the bacon and country music. Bacon is awesome, in moderation, just like everything else. Some crumbled bacon on a salad takes it to the next level. Mmm. And country music is SO GOOD. It’s not all rednecks and broken hearts, either. I’m working on liking tofu… it’s a slow road but I’m getting there 😉

haha I totally agree about facebook, though I am not a wizard at it but the changes never really seemed to bother me
some people do need to get over it 😉

I am so SO with you on everything. But (of course there’s a but!) I still hate country music. If it’s any consolation, I never listen to the lyrics in songs. There’s just something about the style that offends my musical sensibilities. I hate other genres of music as well though, it’s not just country!

Personal taste is a legitimate reason not to like it, in my opinion 😉 Blind hate is not!
BTW–I got a facial today and the lady who did it reminded me so much of you! You really are in my thoughts all the time 🙂

im on board with 1, 2…even 3 im fine with (for others) in moderation…but country music is horrible and i think we are a pretty lazy generation. im ok with it though. 😉 just this morning kyle told me that he predicts in a few years there will be in app on our phones that coordinates with our AM alarm and starts our coffee makers automatically. laziness can lead to ingenuity, right!?!

That app would be GENIUS! 😉

Great list! About Generation Y, maybe it’s more that we (deep down inside) question our parenting skills… 😉

I am totally with you on bacon… cept I prefer it in strip form more than any other way! And we all know how I feel about tofu!! Want to know what’s shocking though? The Boy doesnt care for it!! He is one of those people who says “it doesn’t taste like anything”. I havent made GC tofu for him yet though…….so I’m determined to change his thoughts on this soon.

Hilarious that you mentioned Facebook changes. It is sad how much people ruminate over that for days…

Love this post, and you back blogging ! (i feel like I’ve said that so many times on ‘According to Lara’ .)

hugs,

I’m right there with you on the ridiculousness of Facebook changes. I refused to sign in for about a week because I was so incredibly sick of the whiners!!! Drives me crazy, nothing will ever stay the exact same or go back to the original version no matter how much you complain. Change is inevitable. Deal with it.

Funny story about tofu (and I agree with you!). My dad, an omnivore in all other aspects, was afraid of tofu until this spring. He likes to go out to eat, so I did a bit of research and found out that one of the best tofu dishes in our town was served at one of his favorite restaurants. We went, I ordered it, he tried it and loved it. Granted it was fried tofu in a lemongrass sauce with cashews, and who isn’t going to love that?

In addition to bacon, I think many fatty foods (especially saturated fat) get a bad rep/rap unfairly. I thought we were past that whole low-fat craze!

Cute story! I think anyone can be made into a tofu believer if they have it prepared to their special tastes 🙂

Come to Nashville. Plenty of country music, and I’ll be sure to stock the bacon. 🙂

Me too with the Facebook thing. Either deal with it or get off. Very simple! Now the bacon? Yes, the calories are fine, but the sat fats and nitrates are another problem. Occasionally it’s fine, but every day – probably not. Have a great week Lara!

You are so right. The irony is that the people using Facebook are not morons- they are on social media for goodness sake- you’d think that adapting to change would be part of their makeup!?!!

My mom got into country music before she passed away and I’ll even admit that I ended up watching that reality talent country show and enjoying it! When I’m on long drives, sometimes I’ll hit a country station and it reminds me of her.

And there’s tofu and there’s tofu. I LOVE the kind that is a little bit textured and really soaks up wonderful flavors. Then there’s the super low cal type that I buy that couldn’t even think of absorbing anything. I really need to switch.

I love your writing style/voice 🙂 …makes me miss you!

“backwoods alchoholics who sing about nothing but broken hearts and the American flag”??? OMG Lara, that is awesome!!! I LOVE country music, much to the horror of some of my friends (yeah, I’ve paid money to go see Brad Paisley (who I also think is hot!), Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum…). And thumbs up to 3 of the other 4. The only exception, I’ve tried and tried and tried to like tofu, but I just can’t. Now, if it was wrapped up in bacon?? HMM…..
Have a great week!!!

I love all of those artists, too! I understand that tofu is not for everyone, too. I just find that a lot of people won’t even give it a chance based on its texture.

Great post…and so true!!
I know what you mean about those tofu people. You just have to give it a try!! 🙂

I dont get the tofu haters either!

Reply

Paige November 18, 2011 at 5:18 am

I don’t know either! Rap or rep?! I think I go with rep…but I’m not sure at all lol
Now, for your five, some of these things are actually overrated where I live. Here (I live in central Illinois) EVERYONE loves country music (I think it’s pretty ok) and bacon is all but worshiped! haha
But I do totally agree with you about tofu! It can be very tasty and versatile.

Hahahha… I am one with you with regards to the FB changes, it is free anyways! Why not let the designers and programmers decide about it. If they don’t like the new format, get out of the bandwagon. And ow…. I love tofu and bacon…. 🙂
